Gideons Spring Faith Fund Mailer

We recently completed a fund-raising spring mailer for the Gideon's International. We designed around the concept of 'planting seeds' and decided that seed packets would be a nice way of conveying that idea. The Gideon's have 7 different international regions, where they work to get Bibles to the people. So each packet (8 in all) represents one of those regions and the back of the packet details stats of those regions and testimonies in how 'planting seeds of faith' has produced results. The original plan was to create actual seed packets with seeds that the recipients could actually plant which would serve as a symbolic reminder of the need to support what the Gideons are doing. In the interest of cost saving, however, we actually chose to just create faux packets to get across the concept. The challenge was to create something that immediately conveys "seed packets" without being able to show fruits or vegetables. We felt a retro design helped to better communicate this.

We just established a final cover for the first in a series of fiction space books directed at tweens and teens for Thomas Nelson. The series is about a mining company who mines Helium 3, an element found only on the moon. This particular book focuses on an orphan boy named Crater who is a miner and has lived on the moon for as long as he can remember. It was a fun genre to get to work in for a change. Here is a variety of the comps we did for it.

And we will concede that those people might be completely justified in thinking that. So after greasing our moustaches, sipping a lifetimes worth of black tea and replacing our frequent outbursts of frustration with a more polite "pardon me!", here's what we came up with.

We recently had the opportunity to start working with our insanely-talented, illustrator friend, Wayne Brezinka, on a book series project. He's the perfect person for the job. Never are we not blown away by his work. Therefore we want to take some time highlight him, here.

For those not familar with his work, Wayne specializes in collage illustration, though he also has a very honed-in watercolor and hand-rendered illustration style as well. He uses all kinds of cut paper and other textiles, in addition to paint and ink to create brilliant and very unique illustrations that are loaded with depth and life. His work has a way of transcending the divide between commercial design and art. Every work becomes not just a marketing piece for a client, but also something that anyone would desire to have hanging in their house. It's also worth noting that most all of his work is done the old "cut and paste" way...outside of the computer!

Wayne work has graced the covers or interiors of the New York Times, the L.A. Times, Paste magazine, the Nashville Scene, the Chicago Tribune, and much more!

Here's our cover for Toby Keith's latest album, Bullets In The Gun. It's a lenticular cover (turn it from side to side to reveal different images kind of thing), and the first opportunity we have had working with this process. It provided some unique challenges, visually and conceptually, especially given that the decision to go lenticular wasn't made until well after the photoshoot had already taken place. Therefore our conceptualization was limited to images we already had. Despite the challenges, we are happy with the final product.

We recently developed a new identity for Renewal Ministries. This ministry, which has been newly handed down to Ray & Jani Ortlund is committed to "theologically responsible spiritual revival". We took a pretty aggressive interpretation of this stated Renewal goal per Ray's request, and this is what we came up with.

This mark look familiar?
Dr. Ray Ortlund is also pastor of Immanuel Church here in Nashville, and he wanted the Renewal identity to share similar visual characteristics to the Immanuel identity, which we completed last year. So the typography and colors help make that connection obvious.

Pollution & the Death of Man

We recently had the opportunity to work on a redesign of one of Francis Schaeffer's great books, Pollution and the Death of Man for Crossway. The book deals with multiple worldviews concerning man's relationship to the earth and the consequences of those views. It also challenges Christians to examine how their faith should ultimately lead them to a greater love and stewardship of God's creation. We kinda slipped into a bit of a doomsday mindset and went to work, using striking destructive concepts to relate the content and title of the book. It was a fun process. Here are a few of the comps.

Here are a few shots I took yesterday from the pedestrian bridge downtown. The river had already receded quite a bit when I took these. On a couple of buildings, you could see where the water line was when it crested a day before. Amazing, yet discouraging altogether.

While our houses were fortunately spared during the flood over the weekend, our office did suffer a small amount of flooding. There was a couple inches of water on the ground until we broke the threshhold in the front door to allow most of it to drain. The water was very dirty as you can see. We moved everything out and gave the concrete floor a good hose rinse, squeegying, and mopping and it was good to go for Tuesday. Thankfully nothing important was lost. Special thanks to Darren's son Tanner who mopped and squeegied like a champion.

She took to her blog, GOOP, to give some reviews on the best of Nashville: everything from eateries, bars, cafe's, etc.....all the things that make Nashville a cool place to live. Frigidaire, I don't even know who you are anymore

If you own any Frigidaire appliances, you've probably grown accustom to the vintage Thunderbird looking logo type that is the company's identity. That identity whether you liked it or not had quite a bit of equity built up in it and it spoke to its audience on a variety of levels. Seeing this mark conveyed a sense of trustworthiness--that "we've been around a while" aesthetic, if you will. It's not the greatest mark in the world, but it definitely had character. Notice all the "hads".
All that has recently been flushed down the drain with the unveiling of the new logo as pictured below. Not only does this new logo totally disregard the past success of the company, it also totally disregards it's future, unless of course they're trying to become a generic, character-lacking company like their triangle in place of an 'A' logo states, in which case I am admittedly off-base.

Unfortunately another timeless Paul Rand logo has been exchanged for a generic, less effective one. This time it comes from Yale Press as reported by the Yale Daily News. The logo on the left is the legendary Rand's design that was done in the mid 80's, and the one on the right is the newly adopted one. Not sure exactly what has prompted such a distinguished and unique identity to be tossed for a more generic (for the Ivy League at least) logotype, but nonetheless, another one bites the dust. Sorry Paul, your work still lives on in our hearts. The Brand New blog has more on this.

I think it's always fun to see a designer's thought process with a certain project, rather than just seeing the final. So here's a recent first round of covers we did for a book called 'Surprised By Grace' (about the story of Jonah in the Bible). As you can see, we tried to deliver a variety of looks and concepts. None of these actually ended up the final, but nonetheless they hold a very special place in our hearts along with all the other rejected work that happens with every round of designs.

Holiday Inn recently rebranded themselves. New logo, slightly updated color palette, etc. I can't help from thinking though, everytime I pass by a new Holiday Inn, that it feels more like I'm passing by a local convenience mart or gas station. That's the 'vibe' I get. Not that of a nice place I would like to stay over night. Maybe that's just me though.
